Cornwall announce side for Tamar Cup clash
Cornwall RFU are delighted that the Tamar Cup fixture against Devon returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019.
The CRFU are also very pleased that St. Austell RFC’s Tregorrick Park Ground has again been chosen to host the fixture, as they did in 2018.
This season’s match is on Wednesday 15th March and kicks off at 7:30 pm. Entry is £5, with Under 16s free.
The last game in the series in 2019, was held at Plymouth Albion’s Brickfields Ground when Cornwall defeated Devon by 28-13, thanks in part to a hat-trick of tries scored by Alex Ducker.
This season both Cornwall and Devon will use the fixture as preparation for their respective County Championship campaigns.
Both sides will be drawing players from level 5 down for this match, with St. Austell’s Matt Shepherd captaining Cornwall from full-back on the night.
This is an ideal opportunity for many in this Tamar Cup side to put their hands up for inclusion in the County Championship squad when that is announced next month.
Cornwall (St. Austell, unless stated): M Shepherd (Capt), J Kessell (Camborne), S Parsons, J Semmens (Pirate Ams), C Levick (Penryn), A Simmonds (Camborne), CJ Boyce; D Job, M Davey, D Prowse (Camborne), M Vian, R Edwards (Wadebridge Camels), A Inch, J Nicholls (Camborne), T Duncan (Truro).
Replacements: R Bentham (Devonport Services), T-L Southworth (Camborne), J Heazelton (Camborne), C Taylor, L Jolly (Camborne), R Brownfield (Pirate Ams), J Sidwell (Camborne), D Tyrrell.
Travel information regarding Tamar Cup
Cormac have announced that the A391 Lockengate, between Bilberry & Lockengate, will be closed for emergency repair works from Monday 13 March until Friday 24 March. This is the primary route from the A30 to St Austell through Bugle so it would be worth advising travelling spectators travelling via the A30 to plan their routes to avoid this section of road.
The recommendation is to come off at the Cornwall Services, Victoria and travel through Roche.

Cornwall U.20s 45 – 0 Camborne School of Mines XV
By Terry Williams at Hayle RFC
Cornwall U20’s continued their build up to the forthcoming County Championship with a final warm up game v Camborne School of Mines at Hayle RFC on Wednesday evening in front of a good crowd in excess of 150 spectators. The U20’s ran out winners 45-0.
The CSM were not up to full strength and were forced to bring in a few guests. However, they gave the U20’s a stern test particularly on defence, where some stiff tackles went in.
U20’s started brightly with the opening try coming in the first minute. The second followed after 15 minutes. However, U20’s then managed to give away a succession of penalties for technical offences, some 20 in 1st half alone.
Half time saw the score at 17-0.
The U20’s team was made up of 25 players and between 45 and 47 minutes the coaches emptied the bench and everyone had a run out.
As the CSM tired towards the end the U20’s ran in a number of tries eventually winning 45-0. The coaches were generally pleased with the performance but the number of penalties conceded was an issue to be addressed in the next training sessions of which there are 2 before the Championship begins.
A solid performance, particularly in defence, but work still to be done.

CRFU President visits Helston RFC
CRFU President John Sumnall visited Helston RFC last Saturday attending their home game against Illogan Park.
Whilst there John learned of the club’s plans to get more involved in the local community and he had this to say. “I was very interested in your present work whereby the Club is becoming more involved in the community which will be greatly aided by the provision of a new kitchen. This will not only enable the Club to provide hot food to spectators on match days but also to involve provision for meals during the week for specific groups. Very sensibly you are using your facilities to be further involved in the community by the hosting of mental health groups with the possibility of further groups to follow.”
