Cornwall Under 18s win opener at Hartpury
Congratulations to our Under 18s who defeated Oxfordshire Under 18s, 30-25 yesterday at Hartpury.
Report from Team Manager Paul Howard.
Cornwall U18 v Oxfordshire U18
South West Tournament (Game 1 of 3) Hartpury College – 23/11/25
This year’s campaign kicked off on Sunday with our 1 st game v Oxfordshire at Hartpury
college. This meant an early start with us leaving home just after 06:00 for our bus trip up the
M5 for a 12:00 KO.
It would be fair to say after the long trip (and some of our more interesting training sessions),
there was a little nervousness in the camp. However, after a slow start, conceding an early
try, we soon found our feet. As the work rate lifted, we started to show some fierce tackling
and great hands, allowing us to create gaps and punching holes in the Oxfordshire defence.
The forwards were getting over the gain line, and the back line were exploring opportunities
as a unit, leading us to large slices of possession, and showing off some high-class finishing.
This dominance around the park, lead us to going into half time 4 tries to 2 up.
The 2nd half started well, where the bench was emptied and started positively keeping the
momentum, ending in a good team try. However, with some unforced errors and some untidy defence on penalties, we gave away two soft tries. This led to a tight finish where we traded tries as we looked to gain the initiative again. On the final whistle, there was a sigh of relief from the spectators on a back-and-forth finish, where we just kept in front with the score 6 tries to 5.
Final Score : 30 – 25
Our next game is again at Hartpury on the 7 th Dec, before our final game at Truro RFC v
Devon on the 21 st Dec.
Team : A. Smith, H. Gay, J. Crapp, C. Frisby, O. Heyes, H. Bennetts, O. Goodwin, L.
Crannis (Capt), D. Taylor, D. Davies, M. Wilson, K. Lewis, J. Tribe, J. Andrew, B. Green, E.
Evans, J. Horner, N. Willams, C. Grenfell, B. Nicholas, F. Bulley, D. Webster, E. Richards, M.
Abbott
Tries – Wilson, Taylor, Gay, Bennetts, Lewis, Webster
Also, a special mention to our PHICIS team, Ronnie who was with us today, and Donna who
was with us in our warmup games. Thank you for looking after the boys, as I am not sure if
we have ever had a team that needed more strapping!
Coaches : P Bostock, D Pritchard, P Holman, A Lawton, M Pollard, L Bostock

Good luck to all the squad for this Sunday’s game.
Tommy Adams R.I.P.
The CRFU are saddened to hear of the passing of Tommy Adams.
We extend our sincerest condolonces to Tommy’s family and friends and to all at Camborne RFC.
The following statement was released by Camborne RFC
On behalf of the Club, it was with great sadness that we heard of the passing earlier today of Tommy Adams at the age of 60.
He was a true ‘One Club’ man serving as 1st XV captain for two seasons from 1992-94 and also winning 8 caps for Cornwall.
Tommy was not only one of the Cherry & Whites finest players but also a larger than life character known throughout the rugby world.
He was a giant of a 2nd row forward and both talisman and enforcer of the ‘Town’ pack for many years. His try scoring exploits were legendary and he was always wonderful company off the field.
Tommy faced his health challenges in later life with characteristic fortitude and humour.
Condolences to all of Tommy’s family and friends.

Richard Sharp – R.I.P.
It is with great sorrow that we have been informed of the passing of Cornish rugby legend Richard Sharp who passed away on 3rd November.
CRFU President, Andy Reed a fellow British & Irish Lion, expressed his sadness at the news, on behalf of the CRFU he extended his condolences to Richard’s family and many friends.
The following is by Steve Murley CRFU Chair.
It is with deep sadness that we record the passing of Richard Sharp OBE, the former England and British & Irish Lions fly-half whose fine sporting talent was matched by a quiet dignity and unwavering sportsmanship. He died on 3 November 2025 at the age of 87.
Born on 9 September 1938 in Bangalore, India, to a mining engineer father educated at the Camborne School of Mines and a mother born in Redruth, Cornwall, Richard’s early life was rooted in the South West. After the family moved to England, he was educated at Montpelier School and then at Blundell’s School in Devon, before reading at Balliol College Oxford, where he won three rugby Blues between 1958 and 1961.
From his Cornwall heritage he developed a lifelong loyalty to his home county’s sporting life, both in rugby and cricket.
Richard began his club career with Redruth RFC in Cornwall, representing the club and his county with commitment and flair. At county level he played 28 times for Cornwall between 1957 and 1966. He also played for Wasps and Bristol. He also played for the famed Barbarians RFC.
Internationally, he earned 14 caps for England between 1960 and 1967, and captained the side, most notably leading England to the 1963 Five Nations title. In 1962 he was selected for the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa, playing in two Test matches.
His style on the field was celebrated for its elegance and precision — one contemporary described him as “probably the most elegant fly-half England ever had”.
Richard also made his mark in cricket representing Cornwall County Cricket Club in the Minor Counties Championship between 1957 and 1970, qualifying as an all-round sportsman of the Duchy.
Across his many roles—clubman, county stalwart, international captain—Richard Sharp was widely admired for the manner in which he carried himself. His conduct both on and off the field was marked by humility, fairness and respect for opponents. Many in Cornwall still recall not only his brilliance at fly‐half, but his generosity of spirit, his willingness to mentor younger players, and his steadfast loyalty to his roots. He was made an O.B.E. in 1986.
Though the records seldom quantify such attributes, those who encountered him remember him as a gentleman in every sense of the word.
Richard will be remembered not simply for the tries scored, the caps won or the tours undertaken—but for the person he was: quietly assured, respectfully modest, unwavering in his support for Cornwall and his sporting communities.
His passing will be mourned by his family, his many friends in Cornish and English sport, and all who valued not only his athletic talents but his character.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and to the communities—rugby, cricket, Cornwall—that he enriched so deeply.
The funeral of Richard Sharp took place on Monday December 8th at Penmount. Former England captain and British & Irish Lion Budge Rogers gave the eulogy. The CRFU were represented by President Andy Reed and Chair Steve Murley.
